Recently I've noticed photos of people using carbide tipped tools in Taig and other small lathes. What is the verdict? Do the carbide tools offer a significant advantage on these small machines? I seem to recall being told that micro lathes didn't have the motor power or rigidity to benefit from carbide tools. Is there any truth to this?

Sorry about the subject. I couldn't resist.

I've had a Taig lathe since early 2000, and a 4-axis CNC Taig mill since late 2000. I was pretty active on the Yahoo Taigtools forum for a number of years, but a whole series of changes in my life and my shop pulled me off the forum over the past few years. Because of progressive failures in my mill controller hardware, my mill has mostly been idle for the last year and a half.

I'm in the process of converting my mill to using a Keling ...

I've got a Kelling KL-G540-48 on order for my older Taig CNC mill. It's got the old dovetail ways on the Z axis rather than the new box ways, and the controller it started life with was the older quadrature drive controller rather than the newer step/dir controllers that are shipping now. The mill still has the original 200 oz-in steppers it came with, and this is what I'll be using with the G540.

I'm reading through the Gecko drive threads here, and I've got the Gecko and the Kelling ...

Hi guys,

A discussion came up on the Geckodrive Yahoo group the other day where Mariss was explaining the benefits of micro-stepping and how their stepper drives morph from 10x micro-stepping to full steps as the RPM increases. That provides all the benefits of smoothness that micro-stepping offers without a reduction in power. I shot a quick video of two Taig 2019s one has 1/2 step driver and the other a Gecko G540. The difference between the drives is even more apparent in person. Note ...

I am going to make a zero adjustable dial that I saw somewhere, and while I'm at it, I am going to make a new dial with a metric scale on it. If anyone hasn't done it, maybe you could throw me a few suggestions on the best way I would go about scaling the dial. I haven't actually made the dial part yet in the lathe, so I can make it slightly bigger or smaller than the imperial one that comes as standard. My main concern ...

I make a few types of cutters for the lathe and mill. Mostly things that cost too much, or something that needs to fit a certain job. (I don't make end mills when they're only $5!).

I've been doing things like the counter bore above for quite some time, but until now haven't written up a page specifically about tool making. I recently needed a new #10 counter bore and this time I took pics and wrote up a quick page on the particulars.

Hi all;

No paying work coming in 'til Friday, so I made something that's been on my shop "to do" list for about 10 years. Really, 10 years, at least! I'd been using an old surface gauge to hold my dial indicators and DTI's for years and years, and every time it's a hassle. It always is when trying to use something for other than what it's made for. Anyway, I finally got around to making this little setup for holding my indicators on the lathe head stock. It will fit on the ...

I was thinking of another of the 'many' projects I hope to do someday, and was wondering if anyone has chucked up a diamond bit into a collet on the mill and tried engraving glass? The glass I was thinking of is standard sheet glass (probably toughened) (10mm?)

I am assuming very light cuts. Glass would be held in with cardboard or rubber between clamps and table. Also clamps not tightened down hard. Plenty of lubricant. High RPM on spindle. Anything else you guys can think of???

Looking for a nice small taig lathe (or other) in Canada that I can

pry from your cold clutches. Want to work on some small steam engine parts.

So if you have a small lathe lying around and want to get rid of it, drop me a note. I can do PayPal to ensure the money gets to where it has to promptly.

Others here can vouch for the fact I pay promptly .

It is machined out of Corian Plastic also but with the surface finish very fine it almost feels

like soapy bone.

Bryan

only bad part was I broke my bit after this by rapiding it into a clamp while not paying close

attention, and starring at the finished work, pout, now i have to find a place that sells engraving

bits and takes Pay-Pal

My Taig arrived last week while i was traveling for work and last night i unboxed it and made my first cuts with it. I'm really pleased with the quality and the feel for such a small machine. I told my wife to come into my 'workshop' to check out the mill and she had to take a few looks until she could actually find it, so either she was expecting a Bridgeport or my room is a mess!

I plan on moving to CNC, hopefully this year, and sooner rather than later.

Can the stock Taig motor be used in the inline set up ? I think I would prefer the inline mounting method.

I have been researching various ways to add a variable speed spindle motor to the Taig mill, both the manual version and the CNC mill. One of the drawbacks to the mill is having to change the belt ratio and the difficulty of keeping it aligned properly.

I looked into various 56C frame motors to replace the existing motor in the stock location but came back to the fact that we would still be left with a huge motor hanging off the side of the machine, and likely the same hassle with belt alignment.

Hello guys, I'm on the road working and have taken some community college night classes. One is precision instruments, and the other is basic milling. The instructor suggested I take a internet class on cnc milling. It's all centered on the Haas Controls. Will this class help me at all? I plan on using Mach3 and maybe CamBam like Jeff has recommended.

Preparatory Words

Some G words alter the state of the machine so that it changes from cutting straight lines to cutting arcs. Other G words cause the interpretation of numbers as millimeters rather than inches. While still others set or remove tool length or diameter offsets. Most of the G words tend to be related to motion or sets of motions. Table 4 lists the currently available g words.

Ok, DAVE....... not to sound like twitter or anything.....

I got a lovely image from one of you, thank-you, and

I have since refined the drawing, coded it and cut it...

Here is the result in ALUMINUM..... now if ANY OF YOU

have a good source of 60deg or 90 deg cutters in a

0.250" diameter cutter with tough points as I tend to cut

with mainly the points for carving designs. in various materials.

This one will be blown up later and put on a Paddle or a

Hi all;

Finished up a little boring head I've been working on the last weeknahalf or so. This is from a set of drawings by Steven Campbell. There is a link to the prints on my web page for this build, if you want to check them out. It's quite short so doesn't take up too much space between the spindle and the bed. Screws right on the spindle nose.

Web page for the boring head is here:
