I am going through the prep stage to go to CNC on the mill. I have all of the components and software that I am getting "edjamakated" on, or so I hope.

One of my planning items is the preperation of the mill for the servos. I have never lapped any of the axes, so I think that this would be a good prep to reduce the amount of power that the servoes expend on moving them.

What has been the experiences of the group regarding preping a mill in this respect?

Also, does anyone ...

I was thinking of another of the 'many' projects I hope to do someday, and was wondering if anyone has chucked up a diamond bit into a collet on the mill and tried engraving glass? The glass I was thinking of is standard sheet glass (probably toughened) (10mm?)

I am assuming very light cuts. Glass would be held in with cardboard or rubber between clamps and table. Also clamps not tightened down hard. Plenty of lubricant. High RPM on spindle. Anything else you guys can think of???

Anyone remember their Taig mill settings in Mach3 for steps per unit? I'm just configuring my Taig mill with Mach3 and the default was 2000. From the Mach3 docs, I calculate 20 (TPI) multiplied by 2000 which is 200 (typical resolution of modern steppers) times 10 (typical microsteps). This gives 40,000. This seems quite a difference. Is 40,000 even close? BTW, I've got a Gecko G540.

Thanks to the encouragement from Chuck (kuhncw), I have decided to convert my 2019 to CNC. I note that Taig ships the CNC rigs with 200 oz/in steppers. Is this a good power to go with? I also need to purchase some motor mounting kits. Any suggestions as to suppliers of these?

Hi. New to the forum.

I'm considering starting a small business making bicycle components and I like the Taig CNC mill. I would be designing the parts and assemblies using Pro/Engineer. Is anybody else here using Pro/Engineer? If so, what file format do you use and what software is required to go from a virtual Pro/E part to physical machined part on the Taig?

Also, I've poked around a little and I've seen a lot of the projects that people are doing. There are lots of cool projects, ...

Here's a re-posting of a thread I started over on CNC Zone...

Short version...

I'm thinking about turning around the carriage on my Taig mill to allow me to mount my vise in a way that looks better to me.

Long verison...

As far as I can tell; as soon as you put a vise (or anything else that is greater than 1.5" tall) onto the Taig table you're left with an absolute maximum of 4.33" of Y travel (without modifying the Taig) because the vise/object will hit the Z ways.

Hi guys,

How low can the headstock go before disengaging from the Z axis leadscrew? Is there a measurement I can do to make sure I don't do this? Possibly from the headstock base that is connected to the leadscrew nut(not the dovetail or actual spindle extrusion)?

Sometimes I'm doing jobs and I'm just waiting for that headstock to come crashing down so I'd like to make a reference mark on the column somewhere just to be sure.

Check out this guy's home shop and projects:

http://www.thms.tedatum.com/

He has both a CNC Taig mill and a manual Taig lathe, as well as larger manual mills and lathes, and a very nice home brew CNC router. I just spent over an hour going through his site - very nice descriptions, clear pictures, and some nice videos.

On the Taig CNC mill he has detailed pictures of his CNC build during construction, an extended Y axis fixture plate, a low profile vise, and more.

Enjoy!

looking at CNC mills and noticing a lot of them use "stubby" chucks for bit holders.

I am looking and wondering how deeper cuts are made - surely there must be a way, but all I can think of is making either the cutter holder longer, or using longer cutters.

How is it done? How would I mill the bottom of a pocket 4 inches deep with a taig or homebuilt mill?

I'm concerned about balance when using cutters at high speed, so quite curious how this would be done?

Thanks,

I just purchased some 1 inch square Quick Frame on Ebay for $80 shipped, That is enough for a 42x24x24 Frame with the 3 way end connectors,

I plan on using ABS or Coroplast for the sides and back, with a plexiglass front door..

here is the link for the Quick Frame http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSAA:US:11&Item=370119747410

the same guy has the end connectors also, Great Price

Hello All

Just wondering if there are any CNC Zeus users here? For those not sure about TurboCNC let me just tell you. I had a very tough time trying to get Turbo set up with the motors. I tried Zeus and it just worked. It is a simplified control but it works very well. Maybe not all the bells and whistles like Mach or EMC but it gets the job done. Just thought I'd put that out there for those looking to still use their DOS box or to give a new lease on life.
