 | Subject: G540 Build - need help. Fri Feb 13, 2009 9:13 am | |
| Hi ppls. I have a G540 on its way and no I did not get the "Overstock special at $225.00". price not sure why. Well I want to do a G540 build I have a Dell 2.8GHz Intel-pentium 4 cpu 2 GB of Ram and a 80G hard drive that I will be using as a Donor for this build. I need to know what to keep from the computer and what do I still need to get for the G540 - as in the way of BOB - Power supply and so on Links Pictures and Wiring DG would be great. Thanks Marty |

| I'm not sure what you mean by 'I need to know what to keep from the computer'. I assume that your going to use Mach 3 or some other SW so you need a whole functioning computer to run the software. The G5540 has a BOB built into it (read back over the specs again). Go down load the manuals from Geko's site and read through them a few times. That will help a lot. The Gecko manual are complete with a wiring diagram. Oh, you can also download the mach 3 XML profile with the G540 settings already set up. The power supply you will need depends entirely upon your selection of stepper motors. In the Gecko section of this forum there is a discussion about power supplies and sizing. One warning though. I have noticed that many of the websites selling stepper motors which dedicated to the 'hobbyist' market have no data sheets available for their motors or power supplies. There for your taking their ratings on face value. I'm an engineer from Missouri so I say, 'Show me the data sheet!'. _________________ Happy Machining!

| Thanks jeff. sorry Yes Mach 3 is all i use I guess what I should have said was that I want to put in all in onc case the PC and The G540 and what ever I needed to complete that. As for motors I ordered the KL23H276-28-4B Kelinginc. Maybe what I am looking to do can't be done anyway thanks. I'll check out the other posts. Marty

| I guess you could fit it all in a PC case. I have never tried. I have used a MicroATX mobo to refit a BridgePort Discovery 308 though. Basically the same concept everything (except main drive power supply and vector drive) are in on cabinet. I might have some concern over noise issues with the stepper power supply being in the same case, but you would have to see if that is an issue for you or not. I believe that Keling has the inductance listed for their motors so you can use that to figure you power supply size. See the Geck post I mentioned for the how-to. You also need to provide a fuse on the AC side of your power supply to protect it and the drives. And you will need soem sort of E-Stop switch. _________________ Happy Machining!

| Jeff, what amp fuse do you recommend for the G540? I'm a real slick one, I got it all wired up and completely forgot to wire in the fuse holder into the panel Thanks, Dave |

| Absolutely, that is a beaut, I love the rack cases. Just a note, that heatsink looks to be in the way of sliding the chassis into the rack. Dave |

| Well we don't get to see it mounted in the rack if it is, but not that I need to have it there. Some flat panel Brushed Aluminum would work out say 1/8" and some L channel and were a go! Thinking I could mount the power supply in a case of its own from the PC and the one for the G540 break it out would this be better or no? Well we have these CNC mills I should be able to cut it all out and make it look good, and I will take a design for you and add the Gecko! Plus is a SmoothStepper USB Motion Control something one would or could use with the G540 ? Marty |
