this may be covered somewhat in the New Member forum, but scattered.

I'm in Massachusetts, just a few miles south of Boston. Anyone else in New England?
Where is everyone located?

New England Model Engineering Society is a local group and they have a really good open house which i think is in Feb. at an old watch factory in Waltham.

http://www.neme-s.org/

I've definitely come across clubs in your area but of course I never pay much attention to them since they're not geographically near me. I'll let you know next time i come across one.

Ahh Sun City - we used to call the desert around Palm Springs "Sun Cities" --- After 23 years in the desert we moved to Northern Cal to be near a new grandson -- five years later and we are still here. The weather is both better and worse, but if you like fog it is interesting. I have just started to learn to work my 25 year old Taig received from my brother-in law with the start of refurbished parts and many new parts to get it up to doing some projects. Windsor, CA (just north of Santa Rosa) is the town. The shop is 7'-5 x 9'-7 and packed to the hilt. Having fun.

We are lucky that at least three of the four children are employed at present. The hope is for the one laid off today -- no work in the auto body business..will be able to find something soon.

the model airplanes for me is the connection to a son and a son-in-law -- that's the direction of the projects. I'm putting floats back on a crash victim. Making new anchor
struts to connect with the landing struts. I hope to someday be a mediocre machine worker - especially after seeing many of the projects of this group and those on Nick Carter's site.

Nice I recently turned a flying boat into a U-boat, not pretty, it has a new wing and new nose and new front landing gear now, so all is good, have fun, you can cut lots of airplane parts out of plywood on your tag, use a vacuum system.

Mussonor,

I have the same system as yours that I am getting ready to set up. Have you had a good experience with the Xylotex system? I plan on using the CNC version of the Sherline rotary table for the fourth axis.

Hi. I have had good experience with the Xylotex. I bought a Sherline CNC rotary table too for 4th axis, works great. Run it from a old desktop in DOS with the TurboCNC. Will upgrade to mach3, but the old DOS work OK for my jobs so far. A few times I should have had the G41/42 options, as not installed in the TurboCNC DOS software.

Great! I am going to run the DeskCNC software. May I get your advise when I start? I don't see many Xylotex users.

I still use those controllers in a DEEPGROOVE 1 Box, and as long as you keep your rapids and such down to 10 inches per min (250 mm/min) you will not loose any steps and will work fine if a bit slower. Many here started with these controllers some have since switched to the gecko controllers as they allow for better/faster control but that choice is up to you.

Bryan

Machined out wing rib, top to show connecting tabs, roughly 2" high by 7" long, done on TAIG CNC MILL using Mach 3 and Cut-2D. Tabs are partially machined away on this side. it is smooth I
had just not taken the "fuzz" off of the part after cutting with a light sanding, it was a really nice rib.

Currently I am using Autocad to draw then Cut-2D and Cut-3D and Photo-carve from VECTRIC
who have free trials of all their software, is a great way to try before you buy software and awesome customer service and support.

New to the forum. Own a lathe currently that gets used for making fittings for my bamboo flyrods and just started making flyreels with it. I am now looking at picking up a 4 axis mill.

Rick,

I purchase round stock in 3/8, 5/8 and 7/8 size from various sources on the internet. A number of knife making supply shops carry the nickel silver. I can get it in as small a quantity as 1 foot lengths.

Hoppers are tailing off here but the BWOs are coming off and the Bow is fishing extremely well on the dry.

Thanks Dean,
- Idaho sounds like New Zealand - (at least like our South Island).

I don't have a Taig, - I have an engraving machine, but you guys will probably be able to help me with CNC ( Xylotex, Gecko, Sheetcam, Mach 3 etc.) - I've used milling machines, lathes etc. for more years than I'd care to remember, but CNC ! - that's still something of a mystery to me.

wildun, there are a few sub forums here dealing with CNC software and hardware. If you put your questions in those as a new subject they will probably get noticed better than in this general interest forum.

Ask away. I'm not a CNC person either, but there are a number of them here.
