Postby kbillan on 05 Dec 2008 17:15
What would you all recommend i set my motor speed and accells to in motor tuning? To start with..

also- is there any way to make ignore tool change go away permanently?? as in default would be to recognize tool changes?

Hello Keith,

I don't understand what you mean by:

"also- is there any way to make ignore tool change go away permanently?? as in default would be to recognize tool changes?"

MACH gives you three choices regarding tool change on the Config and then General Config tabs or menus.

Regards,

Chuck

So I am still using the old Deepgroove 1 Controller, it works, things go a little slower.

What is entailed with switching to the Gecko 540?

Is it a project with some parts or is it a plug and play box?

New Motors required? I have (Nema 23 double stack 280oz x 3(xyz),
and one nema 23 single stack 116 oz (a Axis))

Plugs need to be re-wired?

How hard to change over Mach 3.

What improvements will I gain?

Is it worth the money for a hobbyist?

You will need to solder new ends on your stepper wires to fit the G540 (the connectors come with G540.) I would suspect that your motors are fine, though it would be better to know the specs on them to be sure. I'm also not sure what type of power supply you got with the DG set up, you want a good quality power supply. You will also need a way to mount the G540, it take a rectangular cut out. The changes to your Mach profile should be minimal: probably just as easy to start with the 540 profile that Gecko supplies.

Jeff so what would I need to buy to convert my machine over to the gecko, it seems I would need the unit, some sort of enclosure, some cables and some connectors what else? and how much for a bundle deal?

Hi Bryan,

I'm sure Jeff will be along soon to answer your question but I can give a little bit of info here. First off, the 540 is now on sale at Gecko for $210 so you may want to make up your mind asap Wink and the motor connectors are included with the 540 so you would just need cables and a currect set resistor for each motor you connect. These can be connected right in the DB9 housing that connects to hte 540.

As for a housing, this thing is so small you can probably just mill a window in your deep groove housing and you're set. It's only about 2.500" X 6" X 1" in dimensions so as you can see it's fairly small and you do not need a breakout board and is already configured for a charge pump since you're using Mach 3.

There is an excellent resource on the CNC Zone for the Gecko 540 as can be found here: CLICK ME!!!!

Hope that helps a bit-
Dave
