Just a note for you guys, I was thinking about how I could modify a taig headstock to be able to get 1/2" material through the spindle so I contacted taig a little while back and believe it or not, they already make something like this for a customer of thiers. It has the stock 3/4-16" spindle and the opening is .593" through the whole spindle and even comes with a modified pulley that has the smallest belt sheave removed. It arrived today and will be a nice addition to my lathe- Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone was interested- Dave

I was given one when I bought my mill at the factory a few years back. They are for the pool stick maker crowd. While using mine is found it tended to chatter more than the original spindle. I notice that it does not have the preload nut on it, it has a spring clip. Just be aware of the potential chatter issue. Rick

Thanks for mentioning that, Rick, I will definitely keep a watch on that but it "looks" the same as my other headstock. What am I not seeing? EDIT: nevermind, I see what you meant, thanks again- Dave

How do you get a 1 3/8" hole through the spindle when the spindle nose is 3/4" dia? I'm sure I'm not getting the idea here. Yes, show us pictures please. I'm interested. Dean

How about some details, what sort of runout are you acheiving under load? I see these are used for pool cues, are these specifically built for wood or? What type of spindle, any drawings or exploded views of the assembly? What type of materials/bearings are used? Top speed of continuos duty? I see you have 2 locations listed in your profile, do you actually have a website? Dave

Well, thanks but I'll pass as that is too slow and I certainly wouldn't spend $300 for a headstock that I had no idea on how it was built. Thanks anyway and take care- Dave

no problem, head stock is built similar to the taig but its juiced up much, much more i've sold 50 and had no problem, the price is close to $500 and thats a steal if you price around there are 2 guys selling something close for twice the price. When i said 5200,i have no need to go any faster,my bearings are able to handle faster speeds, bearings is made off Chrome Steel, can rotate up to 9000 rpm, bearing has 2 Rubber Seals to protect the bearing from dust or any possible contamination, is self lubricated bearings (bearings are already greased). taigs are rated to 7000 i think it was.have a good week end.

| Actually Taig uses some VERY good quality Turkish bearings in the spindle. In fact a friend of mine (who is coincidently Turkish) purposefully tried to destroy the Taig spindle bearings for part of his PhD work. As I recall they lasted an average of 15hours of continuous use with no lubrication at all. My experience with Chinese made bearing is mixed. Some of them are OK and the cheap 'no-name' types have a huge variability in quality. _________________ Happy Machining!
