PostSubject: Taig CNC Lathe Update   Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:37 pm

So I bought the G540 and wired it up with a little help from "Crevicereamer" over at the "Zone".

I added 2 of the 270 oz. Keling KL23H276-28-4B steppers and the Keling KL-300-48 48V power supply and she runs like a champ so far. Like a bonehead, I completely forgot to wire in my fuseholder which I will have to do soon-

A couple of pics for you of the front of the controller sporting the logo I drew up which I thought was rather appropriate. Wink And also a quick shot of the back as well.

I'm also including a couple of shots of the newly wired homeswitches and notice how I did the Z switch on an adjustable stainless rod. This will be very handy.

Thanks,
Dave

Hello Dave,

Thanks for the update and photos. Nice job on the lathe and I really like your logo.

What did you use for the Z axis lead screw and nut? How much backlash?

Thanks.

Regards,

Chuck

Logo, box, half blind dovetails, the whole thing is beautiful! Very nice work Dave.

I'm curious what your plans are for this new gem.

Very nice set up! I am very happy to see a real E-Stop button being employed!

Good morning guys, thanks for the kind words - Cool

Hi Chuck, I used a 1/4"-20 stainless threaded rod with a delrin antibacklash nut that I made. The delring nut needs the slot cut into it for the backlash adjustment to work but that will be done when it starts to really wear. The backlash at this point is .002" on the X and .000" on the Z but as you know, on a lathe, a little backlash is not critical. I would like to come up with a better antibacklash setup for the X but just haven't done anything about it yet.

I'm still very new to lathe CNC at this point so I just want to get comfortable learning the ropes with it and playing with the Mach 3 wizards. I've already pieced a few of the wizards to get some profiles so hopefully I can have something to show in the future.

Maybe today, I can snap a few shots for you but I still don't have my lighting up yet so it's kind of dark in there. I'm using temporary lighting for now... lol!

Thanks, Jeff, I also believe this should be used at all times.

I wanted to fit a level vial on my Z axis adjustable limit switch to make sure I had it in the right position to pick up the trigger correctly each time I referenced the Z. Thanks to Tweakie (a friend over on the Mach 3 forum) for the hot shoe bubble vial idea, and I've sawn it in 2 and attached one of them to my Z axis adjustable limit switch.

Works perfectly and I get the switch in the perfect position everytime -

I also made an indicator holder for my magnetic based indicator. I just unscrewed the magnetic base and drilled and tapped a block of aluminum and mounted in a T slot on the headstock. Great for those 4 jaw location projects.

Thought I'd share another quick video of a pair of chuck handles I made yesterday. The originals that are supplied with the Sherline chucks are kind of "uncomfortable" for hamfisted people such as myself rabbit

I used LazyTurn which is not finished as of yet but I set it up to take very small passes so that I could just clean the profile up with some sandpaper, and then buff them out.

Very comfortable to use and your thumbs won't slide off the ends either.

So I purchased the Arctic silver epoxy and mounted my little heat sinks and a 120mm fan to blow over them. I ran the motor for an hour and it's cool so it's working perfectly. Not pretty, but VERY functional...... lol!

Now I just have to give it a workout with some actual cutting Cool
